#MyJGDStory: Mirror Messages ✨

Hello there! If you’re reading this, it means you’re a human in 2018, and that means one thing: you are stressed out (even more so if you are a lady human. Sorry dudes, I said it.). Our lives are hectic, nonstop, and we’re bombarded with conflicting messages at every turn. Be a hustler/but money isn’t everything! Love your curves/but here at 1.5 million diet tips to read while you wait in the CVS checkout line! Beyonce’s September Vogue cover was an aesthetically perfect cultural milestone/...nevermind, that’s one thing no one will argue with.

Point being, it’s hard to not internalize the anxiety of modern living, and what we say to ourselves is even more important than external messages. To quote the 14th century Persian poet Hafiz, “The words you speak become the house you live in.”

It’s so true- which is why we at team JGD love our mirror messages. Mirror messages (or mantras) are the quotes, ideas, or words that you use to set your intentions, motivate you, or just calm your mind. Sometimes all it takes to center yourself is a few deep breaths and a moment with your mantra. Build your house with self-love, with reassurance, and with positivity. Below are a few of team JGD’s mirror messages, and for this month’s #MyJGD, we’d love to hear yours!

Janet- "I can and I will."

✨I chose my mantra based on the saying, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” I say this to myself when I'm faced with something challenging, and I feel like I can't find a solution. I practice reflecting on past challenges that I overcame, with gratitude for just how far I have come. I had faith that whatever I put my mind to would happen, and that allowed me to meet those challenges head-on. Once upon a time, JGD was just a far-fetched dream. Everyone around me said it was impossible, or even more kindly, told me it was stupid.  Never in my wildest daydreams did I think JGD would be what it is today- but I made it happen, because I believed whole-heartedly that this was what I was meant to do. When I have no motivation, or feel like things are out of my grasp, I repeat my mirror message until I believe it...and believe in myself, too.

"You are entirely up to you."

I love this mantra! Life can be pretty complicated, but this slogan reminds me of a simple truth: I have the power of choice, and I don't need to overcomplicate that. Wherever life has brought me—whatever the circumstance—I have the choice to decide  it is my season and I will bloom where I've been planted. I can't control others' actions, but I can choose my response. I can guard my thoughts to think positively about my circumstances! I am entirely up to me :)

Dinah

"The world is your oyster."

I actually have this JDG quote on my nightstand, and saved as my screensaver! To me, it’s a reminder that every day I have a choice and a voice. I can control what happens, and how I feel that morning. I am the one who can decide to wake up happy and take on the day. Knowing I have that choice is extremely calming to me.

Lindsey

"Chop wood and carry water."

I first heard this quote on the excellent TV show Rectify (highly recommend for your next binge). In the show, the main character repeats it to himself in a time of existential crisis to remind himself that he has the tools to calm his anxiety: just do the things that need to be done, even (especially) menial tasks. I've tried to find the actual origins of the phrase, but the internet is full of falsely attributed Buddhism/Zen/Confucian quotes, and I've never landed on one that seemed legitimate. No matter, though. When my racing mind is overwhelming, I take a deep breath and remind myself to just do something- fold laundry, do the dishes, make a simple to-do list. Tackling the small things makes me feel more prepared to tackle the bigger things that are actually causing me stress.

Katelyn

"Why not me?"

Right now I'm in such a transitional point point in my life where I have a lot of really lofty goals. I'm trying to learn how to become the best version of myself and really become someone I'm proud of. When I say why not me it's reminds myself that I can reach these big goals I set for myself and reminds me that I can do anything I set my mind to!
